BATTLE SCARS: Weathered stonework in the medieval walls of Battle Abbey
With an hour to kill in nearby Battle one Sunday morning I was caught by the textures of erosion of the ancient wall of Battle Abbey and took these with my mobile phone wondering what stories these stones could tell! The Abbey takes its name from the town and was founded to commemorate the bloody battle that saw William the Conqueror assume control of England at the Battle of Hastings in 1066.The high altar of the abbey church was reputedly on the spot where Harold died and is now marked by a special commemorative stone.
